Cascade Pest Control’s LWTech Horticulture Scholarship

Cascade Pest Control is proud to support students of the Lake Washington Institute of Technology Environmental Horticulture program.

Lake Washington Institute of Technology & Cascade Pest Control

Some years ago Kurt Treftz, a founder of Cascade, was invited to speak to horticulture students about some aspects of insect pest species and control.  Cascade Pest Control has been a leader in developing best practices for structural pests (termites, carpenter ants, rats, rodents, mice) of the Northwest and safer approaches to pest control in general.  As a result Cascade earned various environmental awards in our early stance with least toxic approaches to pest management.  This background left us plenty of intersections to discuss including aspects of entomology and insect identification, understanding Integrated Pest Management, and the safest use of any pesticide application.

Good horticulture practice demands an integral knowledge of insect pest identification and biology, as well as an understanding of how to keep plants healthy and naturally defended against pest infestation and damage.  Integrated Pest Management emphasizes utilizing non-pesticide approaches and establishing “damage” thresholds where other methods may be required.

Lake Washington Institute of Technology has an excellent Environmental Horticulture Program providing students rich opportunities for employment, or even self-employment, in various plant-based venues from garden plants, to greenhouse growing, landscaping and beyond.  Students receive high quality instruction and hands-on learning where they can earn a variety of horticulture certificates, as well as their Associate of Applied Science degree.

Cascade Pest Control is proud to partner with LWTech Foundation to offer the Cascade Pest Control’s LWTech Horticulture Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship will support one student enrolled in LWTech’s Environmental Horticulture program. Students interested in applying, can do so by contacting LWTech Foundation at lwtech.edu/foundationscholarships or calling (425) 739-8134. This scholarship will be awarded out in Fall 2022.
