Our History with Environmental Health

boy looking through magnifying glassModern science has given us more effective pest control, in agriculture as well as for our structures and living environments. This helped solve serious problems of foodshortages (crop production) and diseases (born by various insects and rodents.) However, we realized in the second half of the 20th century that pesticides had to be managed very carefully in order not to cause new problems with our health or the greater environment.

It was in this context that a local Northwest native, Cascade Pest Control, became the first company in the nation to work with both government agencies and private watchdogs dedicated to environmental-health. The process was extremely successful, landing Cascade Pest Control a host of environmental-health and business ethics awards. Cascade Pest Control earned its place as a leader in the early movement of Green Pest Control working hand-in-hand with environmental and health-oriented task-forces and agencies.

We set a particular example for the structural pest control industry. In 2010 Cascade Pest leadership designed and launched an industry-wide initiative to recognize, promote and encourage environmentally-conscious best practices through a separate organization, the Pest Control Operator's Environmental Achievement Group (learn more at www.PCOEAG.org). This group is held to the most stringent business practices and members lead the field with their commitment to effective "green" pest control systems.

This initiative resulted in Cascade Pest Control being the only pest control operator in King County to be recognized at the highest, 5-star level by King County EnviroStars. Additionally, Cascade Pest Control has the rare distinction of being a member of the EPA's Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program.

Today, Cascade Pest Control continues its rich history of serving residents of King and Snohomish Counties with the highest standards of practice. We look forward to protecting your property and health as well, and invite you to contact us.

New pest control industry association, the PCOEAG: Pest Control Operator's Achievement Group

Press Release – For Immediate Release
October 22, 2010 - Bellevue, WA

The Treftz Corp announced the launch of the industry's newest association, focused on recognizing leaders in environmental achievement. The group's website, www.pcoeag.org, states that the PCO Environmental Achievement Group exemplifies innovation and leadership in the pest control industry. Cascade Pest Control, a division of Treftz Corp., pioneered working with environmental groups and earning environmental awards over 15 years ago. “The pest control industry as a whole has been conscientiously serving families and businesses, protecting them from pests and pest-borne diseases for years,” said Kurt Treftz of Cascade. “And now, a number of companies have developed their practices to where government agencies and others are recognizing them. The PCOEAG provides the platform for us to network, share best practices, discuss aras of concern as well as for each to be recognized for that commitment.”

The PCOEAG is designed to raise public awareness of member companies through three levels of participation. The highest level of recognition, Executive Membership, is awarded to those companies that have earned environmental recognition from either a state or federal government agency. Standard members have earned local recognition for their environmental practices. For smaller companies or those who have yet to be recognized, Associate membership provides a way for them to demonstrate their commitment to adhere to the Group's code of ethics and standards. While the initial launch is focused on pest control operators in the United States, the PCO EAG is open to all pest control companies worldwide that meet the environmental standards of the association.

Don Leland, Group Administrator, encourages every pest control company to consider joining. “With three levels of participation any company can be recognized for their effort to be more environmentally aware, and this prestigious brand will help set them apart in their marketplace.” He goes on, “During the launch of PCOEAG.org we are discounting membership for a limited time, so we encourage everyone to act quickly.”

Members can display a unique logo on their websites to raise customer awareness about their commitment to environmentally-conscious best-practices. The PCOEAG has future plans to develop a blog, design marketing packets, and direct interested consumers to the closest PCOEAG member-company for service.

Founded in 2010, PCOEAG.org is the new industry benchmark for pest control companies worldwide. For more information go to the website at www.pcoeag.org.

From KCPQ: Bugs And Insects Emerging Sooner Than Normal

Our mild winter is making them emerge sooner than normal

If this nice weather's got your internal seasonal clock all confused, you're not alone. Billions upon billions are in the same boat, and they just may be in your house too.

“It could be a bad season this year for ants. We could have quite a bit of activity,” says Al Brown with Cascade Pest Control.

The problem - our mild winter has the insects all mixed up. Right now, ants are invading local homes. Normally that doesn't happen until late March or April.

"We've also seen wasps that are starting to show up. Honey bees are starting to show up, so everything's popping up earlier than normal,” says Brown.

So you need to be on the lookout. Don't leave food, dirty dishes or drinks out. And if you do have an infestation, call the pros. Home remedies, like sprinkling pepper in problem places could make the problem worse for you and the exterminator.

“It'll just repel them and they'll change direction. They'll split their nest and we'll end up chasing them all over the place,” says Brown.

Extreme Makeover

Cascade Pest Control donates services to family in need of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Seattle, WA, October 9, 2007 - Continuing a tradition of providing joy and relief to unsuspecting families-as well as good drama with a message of compassion to American viewers-the award-winning ABC-TV hit series, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" came to the Greater Seattle area. And Cascade got to provide extreme pest control.

Extreme Homemaker CastCascade, an award-winning pest control company in the Greater Seattle area, donated its services to a deserving family as part of the makeover of their home. Cascade's job was primarily to provide rodent control, rats being a major problem in the Puget Sound region. Rodents spread disease and other contamination-and are also responsible for damage from gnawing-even known to cause fires as a result of chewing through electrical insulation. Often even after they are gone the contamination leaves a home ruined, their urine, feces, chewing and damaged insulation in walls and attics left behind. This means that besides 'pest control measures,' clean-up, repair and disinfecting is required.

HomeA family in the Highlands neighborhood of Kirkland was selected by ABC as the "hero family" for the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show. The family-Connie Chapin and her four children, were nominated by friends and neighbors. They live in a old house from which Connie operates "Anglefish Swimming" as a home occupation. Due to "life circumstances" she could not keep up with the home's maintenance leaving it with significant structural defects.

The makeover involved demolition of the single-family residence, detached garage and swimming pool from which she works.and replaced with a 3,500 square foot home, a 900 square foot garage and new swimming pool. The work took about 700 volunteers, 100 construction hours over seven days, the Building Industry Association of Washington and the show's crew.

HomeAs quoted in the Seattle Post Intelligencer, Daimon Doyle, Building Industry Association President and lead builder, "I've got small companies donating thousands of dollars worth of material and labor, and then asking what they can do."

As the family was away on vacation their existing home was demolished and a new one constructed. The ordeal was named "Project 511" as the story was aired as the 11th episode of the 5th season of the Extreme Makeover show.

Cascade provides pest control for carpenter ants, mouse/mice problems, beetles, moths, flies, termites, wasps, yellow jackets and hornets. We also remediate attic and crawlspace problems such as decontamination and insulation removal & repair after rodents have soiled and damaged those areas.
Cascade pest control is present in Greater Seattle, the Eastside, King and Snohomish counties.
