Our History with Environmental Health

boy looking through magnifying glassModern science gave us more effective pest control, in agriculture as well as for our structures and living environments. This helped solve serious problems of foodshortages (crop production) and diseases (born by various insects and rodents.) However, we realized in the second half of the 20th century that pesticides had to be managed very carefully in order not to cause new problems with our health or the greater environment.

It was in this context that a local Northwest native, Cascade Pest Control, became the first company in the nation to work with both government agencies and private watchdogs dedicated to environmental-health. The process was extremely successful, landing Cascade Pest Control a host of environmental-health and business ethics awards. Cascade got to be a leader in the early movement of Green Pest Control working hand-in-hand with environmental and health-oriented task-forces and agencies.

We set a particular example for the structural pest control industry. Today there is a slow, but steadily growing number of pest control companies that have relinquished their defended positions and some have likewise won their own environmental awards.

If this nice weather's got your internal seasonal clock all confused, you're not alone. Billions upon billions are in the same boat, and they just may be in your house too.

If this nice weather's got your internal seasonal clock all confused, you're not alone. Billions upon billions are in the same boat, and they just may be in your house too.

“It could be a bad season this year for ants. We could have quite a bit of activity,” says Al Brown with Cascade Pest Control.

mosquitoThe problem - our mild winter has the insects all mixed up. Right now, ants are invading local homes. Normally that doesn't happen until late March or April.

"We've also seen wasps that are starting to show up. Honey bees are starting to show up, so everything's popping up earlier than normal,” says Brown.

So you need to be on the lookout. Don't leave food, dirty dishes or drinks out. And if you do have an infestation, call the pros. Home remedies, like sprinkling pepper in problem places could make the problem worse for you and the exterminator.

“It'll just repel them and they'll change direction. They'll split their nest and we'll end up chasing them all over the place,” says Brown.
