Ongoing Termite Control

Ongoing termite pest control should include a schedule for monitoring termite activity, to help avoid re-infestation. We recommend a professional termite inspection annually to protect your home or business from termite re-infestation. Regular inspections are key to identifying the early signs of an infestation, and finding hidden issues in hard-to-reach places.

Termite Pre-Treatment for Building Sites

Working on a new construction project? Then now is the time to consider termite pre-treatment for building sites. Construction site termite pre-treatment is a process in which the layer of soil directly beneath the foundation and/or concrete slab is treated to create a barrier between subterranean termites and the building.

Cascade provides professional, environmentally safe termite pre-treatment options for new construction. We carefully select termiticides that bind with the soil, to avoid termiticide migration beyond it’s intended placement.

Are there termites in the greater Seattle/Puget Sound region?

Yes, there are two types of termites in the Puget Sound area: dampwood termites and subterranean termites.

Dampwood termites are among the largest termites in North America (perhaps only smaller than a species in Africa). However, Dampwood termites need very wet wood that is already rotting or that will soon rot due to the moisture content. So, although Dampwood termites do damage structures, it is less often and the wood is mostly damaged by wood-rot (wood decay fungus) anyhow. Correcting plumbing leaks or other moisture sources is the primary method of control.

Subterranean termites are most famous for damaging homes. These termites get their name from living underground and tunneling up to the surface to scavenge for wood cellulose to eat. Unfortunately, house structures are a great source of wood for them to eat. Subterranean termites build mud tubes to protect themselves when they traverse up over exposed surfaces, like foundations.

Are there termites in the greater Boise/Treasure Valley area?

Yes, subterranean termites are found in the Treasure valley area, including within the cities of Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Garden City, Nampa and Caldwell.

Subterranean termites are the most common termite that damages homes and other structures. Subterranean termites are named after the fact that their colony is situate in the soil underground. From there they tunnel upward to find wood cellulose to tunnel into and eat. They then carry the wood cellulose back to share with the colon. Unfortunately, homes are a ready source of wood for them to eat. Subterranean termites build mud tubes to protect themselves when they traverse up over exposed surfaces, like foundations.

How do I know whether my home has termites?

The evidence of termites is largely the presence of the “mud tubes” they build, as well as damaged wood exposed during remodeling. Looking for signs includes crawling any substructure crawlspace your home may have.

Ideally, have your home inspected at least every couple of years by a qualified pest management professional. Duly trained and licensed pest control technicians know how and where to look for signs of termites as well as other serious pests.

How are termites controlled, managed, or eliminated?

Subterranean termite control involves one or both of two primary control methods:

1. Treat the soil around the foundation and under concrete slabs to create a barrier that termites cannot pass to get to the house structure and destroy the wood.

2. Setting termite “bait stations” in the ground around the home where the termites find the planted wood stake and return to the colony with bits of toxicant.
