Structural Damage Caused by Ants

Certain types of ants, such as carpenter ants, cause damage to the structure. They can burrow their nests in wood and these nests can cause structural damage and jeopardize the integrity of the structure. Our ant control experts have an experienced eye on what to look for and will take the necessary action to exterminate the ant infestation. Ongoing ant control will protect your house structure from carpenter ant re-infestation.

Inside vs Outside Ant Control

Ant extermination extends beyond the walls of your home structure. Some ant species in the Pacific Northwest can cause real problems from outside your home. For example, carpenter ants have multiple nest sites – some within the structure and others in nearby stumps, logs or trees. They can pose a real threat to your home or business structure from ‘all sides’. They burrow through the walls and can create vast networks of tunnels. With enough time they can cause costly structural damage to your home or business.

Ant infestations inside the structure can also compromise sanitation. Many types of ants will taint food stored in a home. Ant control protects your food storage as well as your food-prep surfaces. This saves you money and will give you peace of mind. Cascade Pest Control experts use techniques to protect your food and kitchen from ant infestation.

Why Use a Professional Ant Exterminator Service?

Getting rid of ants is not as simple as spraying some pest control solution on a counter and hoping for the best. That could be hazardous to you and actually disperse the ants without eliminating them. Our ant control exterminators have the experience and knowledge to not only identify the ant species, but to accurately treat your ant problem safely and effectively.

There are types of ants where insecticide sprays make things worse. For example, when faced with insecticide sprays, Tapinoma sessile—the odorous house ant will actually split up and make more nests. In this case, using off-the-shelf solutions could double, triple, or quadruple your ant infestation. Effective ant control means using the right tools and extermination methods. Not all ants are equal, and our experts know how to attack each species.

Using the Right Ant Control Solution

Each type of ant causes different kinds of harm. Our expert technicians will assess each situation to evaluate the ant problem. Cascade Pest Control experts know how to spot the difference between species. This allows them to use the most effective ant control solutions to remove your ant infestation.

FAQs:
Ant Control Services

Are ants dangerous or harmful to humans?

Most of the ants found in the area are not dangerous. Species like odorous house ants, moisture ants, Argentine ants, and pavement ants do not have stinging or harmful bites. They are mostly just nuisance pests. Thatching ants, however, can have a stinging bite. And all ants can cause harm by spreading pathogens and contaminating food & surfaces.

Why are ants so hard to control?

Eliminating ants can be challenging for several reasons. Some ants tend to create super-colonies with multiple queens, making it difficult to rid yourself of them completely. Some ants “bud,” creating new, separate colonies when under duress. Some ants have a wide, varied diet, making it difficult to eliminate their food sources or get them to bring the bait back to the queen. Other ants thrive in wet environments, which might highlight leaks that need fixing in order to eradicate them.

How can I tell if my house is infested with Carpenter Ants?

This can be tricky, and some ideas found on the internet are misleading—for example, the “sawdust” created by carpenter ants is most often deposited within wall voids and not out in the open. Also, carpenter ants do not usually forage for food in kitchens and other indoor areas like other ants.

Carpenter ants forage outdoors, and finding a trail outside a home, nearby in the yard, or climbing a nearby pine or fir tree are excellent signs that could indicate an infestation within the home. Ideally, an experienced and properly trained pest control technician should be consulted.

A skilled professional pest control technician can search for nest sites and apply an effective protective barrier around your home that “starves” them out and prevents re-infestation. Most often, it takes a series of treatments to outlast the colony, as well as to protect from future infestations.

Cascade Pest Control is extremely fortunate to have worked with Dr. Laurel Hansen, PhD, for decades. She is one of the few leading entomologists in the US regarding carpenter ants.

My ant problem is more outside than inside. What can I do about it?

All ants can be found outdoors, but two common species that tend to make their home around your house (rather than in it) are thatching ants and pavement ants.

Pavement ants are commonly noticed along sidewalks, driveways, concrete porches, and anywhere there is pavement (asphalt, concrete, or brick pavers). They appear along the edges, seams, and cracks of concrete or other pavement.  They can also enter the home and may be found indoors in winter when outdoor food sources are not available.

Thatching ants are beneficial to the soil by aerating it, but they can be harder to eradicate. They aggressively defend their nest mound and also protect themselves individually when disturbed.  Avoid squishing them, as this releases alarm pheromones that provoke other ants in the colony. Do not attempt to burn their mound nest, as it will not eliminate them and could also cause the fire to spread. Thatching ants are difficult to control because their colonies are deep underground. It is best to have a professional pest management company control them.

Are European Fire Ants found where I live?

European fire ants are spreading into various areas of the Pacific Northwest. They are well established just north of the border in British Columbia, Canada, and they have been found in a variety of places in western Washington, most notably in Seattle. At this time, they have not been confirmed in Idaho. However, they are expected to continue to spread.
